We provide access to stable housing and deliver comprehensive services that act as a catalyst to transform lives and communities.” La Casa Norte’s mission and philosophy of service is to impact the social issue of homelessness at the individual and community levels.
La Casa Norte’s (LCN) Housing Advocacy Program provides case management, housing location, and income support services to families who have an open child welfare case and are homeless or at-risk. Our services focus on helping families obtain stable housing, avoid family separation and assist with family reunification.
This is a full-time position working Monday to Friday. Eligible applicants must be available to work some evenings and Saturdays. In order to be considered, an applicant must have a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle in order to conduct home visits within the entire City of Chicago and adjoining suburbs.
Expected Goals and Objectives:
Goal One: To provide case management services and access to cash assistance to families who are involved with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and who are experiencing a housing crisis by:
Working in partnership with clients to assess all barriers to safe, stable, and affordable housing, and to identify steps needed to address these barriers.
Working consistently within LCN’s mission, vision, philosophy of service, including Harm Reduction and Trauma-Informed Care frameworks.
Use Motivational Interviewing techniques to facilitate positive behavioral change.
Providing life skills training, counseling, support, and guidance to clients as they work to overcome barriers to housing.
Linking clients to other LCN services and programming including Housing Location services, technology training, youth services, etc.
Referring qualified families to subsidized housing through DCFS Family Unification Program.
Assisting clients in applying for cash assistance through DCFS or other sources.
Maintaining close and productive communication with DCFS and private agency case workers and supervisors.
Referring clients to other supportive services as needed, including food pantries, clothing closets, legal aid services, parenting classes, substance abuse and mental health counseling, etc.; coordinating these services as needed to obtain wrap-around supportive services for clients.
Advocating for clients as needed to CHA, landlords, employers, and other agencies or institutions.
Providing support to clients in the community through providing apartment inspections, home visits, and accompanying clients to appointments when appropriate.
Accurately tracking and documenting all services provided.
Completing required billing and documentation as described in contract.
Goal Two: To assist clients in obtaining and maintaining stable housing by:
Providing education on tenant rights and responsibilities.
Preparing clients for apartment search and for negotiations with landlords
Conducting housing searches in conjunction with client and with housing location staff via internet search, partnership with community based organizations, and neighborhood outreach.
Follow up with clients once housed; assist with mediating any potential housing problems.
Attending CHA meetings and appointments with clients as needed.
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, all La Casa Norte employees are responsible for contributing to the overall success of La Casa Norte by:
Attending weekly staff meetings and other staff trainings.
Participating in La Casa Norte's fundraising events.
Participating in on-and-off site staff trainings, workshops and outreach events as needed.
Collaborating in a team approach to develop new programs and expand existing services.
Perform other duties as needed.
Demonstrated desire and ability to work with homeless and at-risk youth and families, providing appropriate support, motivation and compassion in accordance with La Casa Norte’s mission and philosophy of service
Ideal candidate will have at least one year’s experience working with homeless and at-risk youth.
Experience or willingness to work in outcomes-based case management
Knowledge and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field, or equivalent experience required.
SPANISH/ENGLISH BILINGUAL Preferred
Strong computers skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet browser, etc.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Knowledgeable of the social and cultural patterns of Latinos & African Americans
Ability to work independently and creatively
Desire, creativity, and flexibility to work in a new and fast growing agency
Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
Ability to handle various projects concurrently
