UIC Center for Literacy FAST Program: Social Service Department and The Adult Education & Career Transitions
FAmily STart (FAST) Learning and Support Services, a division of the UIC Center for Literacy in the College of Education, empowers and strengthens Head Start families in Chicago. Our mission is to provide access to high-quality, research-based learning opportunities in collaboration with community partners. Our vision is to break the cycle of poverty and collectively strengthen communities through family learning services.
The Adult Education and Career Transition Program is an important part of achieving FAST’s mission and vision. Current and future Head Start parents interested in continuing their basic education are enrolled in or referred to classes/tutoring in English-as-a-Second Language, GED (in English or Spanish) and literacy/numeracy. Learners also receive case management services, career transition support, and technology training.
Job Summary: This position facilitates the process of helping adult education students overcome barriers that are impacting their educational goal(s) and their transition goals to post-secondary education and job opportunities.
Assist students in resolving non-educational personal issues that affect learning and program completion.
Help students solve problems independently.
Identify need for intervention.
Conduct intake interviews to identify possible barriers to success.
Establish relationships with organizations that offer support services.
Conduct regular conferences with students to discuss progress and identify needs for additional assistance.
Co-facilitate workshops (i.e. life skills, SMART goals, etc.)
Co-facilitate Adult Ed. Learning Circles
Follow-up with students on goals
Maintain individual case files.
Provide students with referrals for services utilizing the proper channels and follow-up.
Supervise student interns
Foster an environment of mutual respect and cultural sensitivity during interviews.
Model Cultural Sensitivity, Positive Conflict Resolution Skills, and Professionalism
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field
Case management experience
Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task-oriented, non-judgmental, open personal qualities, clear sense of boundaries
Must have knowledge working with MS Office programs ( I.e. Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel)
Travel: some travel required between FAST locations within the Chicagoland area.

Additional Salary Information: This salary is based on working 30hrs a week.

The UIC Center for Literacy is a public service and research center that works to improve literacy education, policy, and research at the local, state, and national levels.
We provide leadership and technical assistance to Chicago area schools and community-based organizations for the purpose of enhancing the quality of literacy services. We also work with public and private entities to formulate policies that support effective literacy programs.
The Center responds to issues in literacy education by:
