The Association for Autism and Neurodiversity (AANE) is a national direct service organization headquartered in Watertown, MA. AANE's mission is to help Autistic and similarly Neurodivergent people build meaningful, connected lives. We provide individuals, families, and professionals with education, community, and support in an inclusive atmosphere of validation and respect.
AANE serves more than 12,000 Autistic and similarly Neurodivergent individuals, their parents and family members, clinical professionals and educators who work with Neurodivergent individuals, as well as employers looking to hire and support Neurodivergent talent, every year. We welcome anyone who might find our services helpful, regardless of diagnosis or neurotype, to join our programs and services.
Nearly 30 years ago, AANE's founders asked, what does an Autistic individual need to overcome the trauma of navigating a world not built for them, and thrive?
The answer was revolutionary at the time: an organization that offers affirmation of one’s experience; individualized skill-building to reach personal goals; connection to information and community; training for non-Autistic individuals to foster ...understanding, inclusion, and access.
Key to this answer was first-of-its-kind collaboration between Autistic individuals, their families, and professionals to develop impactful services.
AANE has always been governed by and for its stakeholders, and most of AANE’s staff, board, and volunteers have direct experience with autism. AANE employs Autistic adults in clinical and administrative roles from entry-level to leadership. Clinical staff bring lived experience and expertise in mental health, occupational therapy, and education fields. AANE’s Board of Directors consists primarily of Autistic adults or family members of Autistic individuals, and they oversee AANE’s strategic planning, development, finances, and governance.
Today, there is still no other organization quite like AANE in the autism space. Our expertise in online service delivery enables us to foster authentic, meaningful connections, while removing the barriers of in-person programming: anxiety about leaving home, transportation challenges, a lack of childcare, and/or environmental sensitivities that cause stress and discomfort. AANE anticipates that, in FY28, we will serve 20,000 people every year.
