SDSU Imperial Valley is a campus/college of San Diego State University serving the desert area of southeastern California. It is accredited as an integral unit of SDSU and operates under the same governance structure and university policies. Established in 1959 by an act of the State Legislature, SDSU IV offers its programs at two locations in Imperial County: Calexico and Brawley. Offering four-year and two-year undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and post-baccalaureate credential programs, SDSU Imperial Valley helps matriculated students achieve their higher education goals. Currently, SDSU IV employs 61 full-time faculty and staff members.
The SDSU Imperial Valley Student Affairs unit, working in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity at the San Diego campus, are mutually responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty. Areas of services include but are not limited to, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Educational Opportunity Programs, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Veterans Services, Student Ability Success Center, Student Health Services, Student Life and Leadership, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Testing Services, and Supporting Associated Students.
Under the direction of the Dean for SDSU Imperial Valley, the Dean of Students is the lead administrator for the Student Affairs unit. The Dean of Students works in conjunction with Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) which supervises the position in providing services to students at SDSU Imperial Valley. The primary mission of Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) is to provide services to students and the university community that support and enhance the education of the whole person, as well as nurture a healthy and productive learning-centered campus environment. All C&PS services are provided and designed to promote academic excellence and retention at SDSU. Counseling & Psychological Services provides, either directly or through collaboration and referral, a variety of counseling services, (e.g., individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy), assessment and evaluation, faculty and staff consultation, and professional training/supervision, consistent with the educational mission of the university.
The position coordinates all operational aspects of the comprehensive student services programming provided by SDSU Imperial Valley Student Health Services which includes Counseling and Psychological Services to serve the physical and mental health needs of the campus community.
The position will coordinate/arrange for the provision of the following: The full range of individual and group psychological services to students from a wide range of multicultural backgrounds presenting complex psychosocial, social, personal, and family problems; crisis/suicide intervention and trauma response/debriefing; outreach to the campus and surrounding community; consultation, prevention education, and training services to individuals (e.g., students, faculty, staff, parents, administrators), campus groups (e.g., student clubs, residence hall communities, fraternities, sororities) and organizational units (e.g., Associated Students, University College's Academic Departments, Student Affairs Offices).
The position coordinates the referrals of basic medical needs, family planning services, clinical laboratory diagnostic services, basic diagnostic x-ray services and pharmacy services. In addition, this position is a liaison for public health prevention, health education, and student health events including health fairs, seminars and workshops and assists students with clearing immunization requirements.
This position performs moderately complex student services work, interprets policy and develops processes and procedures in consultation with management, and advises staff, other program coordinators, students, and the public.

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis
Experience and effectiveness with motivational counseling approaches
Ability to identify potential barriers and empower students to access services both on and off-campus
Experience with outreach to ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities and other traditionally underrepresented students
Trauma response debriefing capabilities; previous university counseling center experience
Previous university counseling center experience and knowledge of other University systems of case management and support services for students
Experience with case management, brief interventions, and crisis management in a college counseling center is desired (may be substituted by experience with transitional-aged youth (TAY) populations in other settings
Significant knowledge of and experience making discerning judgments regarding complex ethical and legal issues is required
Case Management Skills
Ability to effectively provide case management and client advocacy.
Ability to interpret physical and mental health data, record documentation, and consult effectively with other professionals.
Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports that are clear, concise, and comprehensive.
Ability to furnish, individually and in consultation groups, informed professional opinions to support comprehensive care for SDSU students.
Hold a basic understanding of private and public insurance options as well as County HHS services for students with limited resources.
Ability to establish effective working collaborations with individuals, groups, and departments both on and off campus.
Ability to establish effective working collaborations between individuals and groups representing different cultures, interest groups and/or departments.
II. Counseling/Clinical Skills
Knowledge of the full range of complex legal and ethical issues that relate to counseling/clinical work including a working knowledge of statutes and codes regarding a counselors 'duty to warn,' child/elder abuse reporting, confidentiality and involuntary confinement procedures.
Knowledge of and ability to work effectively with students from multicultural backgrounds presenting various attitudes and value systems.
Must have demonstrable respect for diversity and an ability to effectively work from a multicultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,304 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304-$6,120 per month.
SDSU Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
